It's our external affiliations that make us different. Our volunteer program is driven by our community partners.
Help us create the next generation of health professionals.
These pre-health students are unusual and special.
First - They're some of the best trained and prepared college healthcare volunteers in Texas.
Second - They use their healthcare skills in a multitude of volunteer settings, some rarely found among pre-health undergraduates.
Third - It will be difficult to find other pre-health college students with the same enthusiasm, drive, and heart for service.
We're a Scouting America organization so character development is an important part of our program. We see significant growth in a freshman's character after their first year. Watching their growth and change is our joy.
We have serious character expectations as we prepare these students for careers as future health professionals.
Our community partners are an essential part of our program.
Our Medical Explorers understand our program purposes and meet the character expectations we encourage in future health professionals. We frequently have several earn the Gold U.S. Presidential Volunteer Service Award. (We only nominate Medical Explorers for the Gold Award.) Notice medals on all the adjacent students.
We even have a required course in Professionalism as a Healthcare Professional.
Omega Leo Medical Explorer Post 4077 is a volunteer medical program at Texas State University that helps students discover their path in healthcare through hands-on service, training, and real-world exposure.
We need our medical community's help and partnership to realize our goal of “Creating the next generation of compassionate health professionals who have a heart and duty for service.”
Medical Explorers have an extensive list of classes in their required Level One courses. And there are more required classes beyond Level One. (Yes, there are training levels beyond the first.) Completion of our Level One classes are required before deployment in medical related volunteer opportunities with much more volunteer service necessary and required before their approval for shadowing and advanced observation opportunities.
We are proud of the help we receive from our community health professional partners.
Medical Explorers are equiped with the skills not normally found outside of professional academic programs.
All Medical Explorers are expected to complete all our Level One classes before medical volunteering
All Medical Explorers must complete the FEMA/CERT class G-317 Introduction to CERT
Wilderness First-Aid is an encouraged class for anyone participating in ground search and rescue.
Changes in the U.S. healthcare system have created an environment where many of the traditional ways students discovered what type of health professional was right for them are no longer available.
We address all of the barriers below. Our program preserves the best of traditions allowing students to find their place as a compassionate health professional with a heart and duty for service.
We're looking for meaningful volunteer/observtional experiences for the Best of our Best. Medical Explorers have prepared themselves and done everything they can do to meet your expectations. We are sure you will be as proud of our students as we are. You can help create the future health professionals you want to see as your co-workers.

Our university creator was the former university president, Dr. Jerome Supple; but we owe a San Marocs industry leader a big thank you for sugesting the idea to Dr. Supple. Mr. Richard Burdick, the president and owner of Thermon Manufacturing, was an international leader in Scouting. As an employer of recent college graduates, he saw a need for a broader industry understanding by recent graduates.
University President Supple selected the Scouting Exploring program as a model upon which to build a college age Career Awareness program. The objective was to broaden "his" students understanding of the industries they have chosen - industry issues, related career tracks, and potential mentors.
