Parent Information

We're glad you're here. We're looking forward to meeting you and other parents. It seems that we meet most parents during graduation, and that's entirely later than we would like.

How Medical Explorers Will Help Your Student

We have a great opportunity available for your student. We're much more than a typical student organization! We're a Volunteer Medical Career Awareness organization that helps students find their place as a health professional. We operate like a big student club, but there is a serious purpose to all we do. Students find their place as a health professional through volunteer opportunities.

Medical Explorers Add Value to an Academic Degree

Medical Explorers are trained in skills enabling them to participate in advanced volunteer opportunities. They will have a series of “required” classes to complete (some with professional certification) before being deployed as volunteers. Medical Explorers are certified at the first professional level of CPR and first-aid skills. Building a Service Resume is an important part of our program.

A Rare Opportunity for Your Student

Our Medical Explorer program is the only program of its kind in the U.S. (that we can find). Its purpose is to provide opportunities to see different health and biomedical careers up close in what can be a very complicated system.

Our purpose is to “Create the next generation of compassionate health professionals who have a heart and duty for service.” We focus on both skill training and character.

What About Academics?

We're retired faculty who understand the importance of academic success. We want our Medical Explorers to be among the best pre-health students at the university. We understand your concerns sending a student into what can be a very distracting environment - a university. We've been there with our own children.

Are we a social organization?

No, we're a “volunteer medical” organization. But our members become close friends.

An advantage is that Medical Explorers are usually all focused and disciplined students.

We use our volunteer program to show your student the different health careers. Many of our volunteer opportunities are difficult to see without us opening the door.

Our program is designed to “Add Value” to any academic program.

How Can You Help Us Help Your Medical Explorer Member

We hope to meet you before graduation, but feel free to contact our senior advisors anytime. Many of us are retired faculty and understand parent concerns and questions. We can help you help your student navigate their university experience.

We encourage you to stay informed about their progress. Follow our Medical Explorers on our social media. Ask about their experiences as a Medical Explorer.

Greater Opportunities for Parent Involvement

For those living near San Marcos, we invite you to attend any of our weekly meetings during the fall or spring semester. Better yet, we invite your participation on a “Parent Advisory Committee.” We only meet once a semester, so we try to make it as easy as possible. Help us grow and plan new opportunities for your student.

Our Goal

We share in your goal of creating a licensed health professional. Your student has selected a difficult career, but even here there can be good options and a Plan “B.”

Chole (adjacent picture) represents all we want for any Medical Explorer. She's an honors graduate (the white stole) and is wearing the U.S. Presidential Volunteer Service Award earned as a Medical Explorer.

This is our shared goal!
