Stay attentive to announcements from officers about training and volunteer activities. If you are participating in an individual opportunity, be sure to keep a liaison or senior advisor informed.

Advanced Medical Explorer Training

  • All Medical Explorers are expected to complete training in Radio Technique. It's important to sound like a professional when using public service radios. When deployed in support of EMS under CERT protocols, we will be using radios to communicate with other First Responders, including EMS and Police.

Improper radio technique is a safety concern. Emergencies demand clear communication.

  • We are frequently deployed to help with Lion vision testing in our public schools. And, we will be conducting vision testing in local daycare centers by ourselves.

Identifying vision problems in children before they are six years old can keep them from having to wear glasses the remainder of their lives. Many vision problems can be fixed at an early age, but after six years of age, they become much more difficult if possible at all.

The vision testing equipment is expensive and operators must be adequately trained. Lions Clubs International is focused on Vision as one of their charity pillars, and in many cases will help with any costs associated with vision restoration.

This is a serious problem when children begin school with poor vision. They quickly fall behind in the ability to read and there will usually be associated discipline problems. We're glad to help with this important quality of life issue.

  • Our Medical Explorers have been a part of the Hays County CERT program since its beginning. We were orignally trained by a former Fire Marshal - Ken Bell, in CERT medical disaster protocols. We were brought into the CERT family to support our local EMS during large community events, such as university football games, graduations, and Wimberley Market Days.

All Medical Explorers must join Hays County CERT, and complete the CERT G-317 course - Introduction to CERT. Advanced Medical Explorers are encouraged to complete many more online FEMA/CERT courses with the eventual completion of G-428 Train the Trainer. This FEMA course will certify you as a FEMA instructor in Medical Disasters.

We're frequently called upon to provide First-Aid and EMS support for other large community events such as Air Shows. And, in addition all Medical Explorers are well trained in Traffic/Crowd Management, so we're one of the first to be called when traffic control help is needed for parades.

These skills are also useful when we're riding with EMS or police, as the Medical Explorer can handle these responsibilities releasing the police for more important duties.

We are always self supplied and supported with our own equipment and supplies, including everything needed for Traffic Control. Outside of the police, we may be the better prepared when it comes to equipment needed for Traffic Control.
