1966
In 1966, Dr. W. E. “Henry” Norris was appointed founding dean of the School of Science, establishing the academic foundation of what would become the College of Science and Engineering. That same year, four departments - Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics formed the initial structure of the school. A Texas native and graduate of Southwest Texas State Teachers College, Dr. Norris earned his PhD from The University of Texas at Austin and brought with him a strong background in teaching, research, and service. After serving in World War II and remaining active in the Naval Reserve, he returned to the university and went on to hold a wide range of leadership roles, including professor, department chair, dean, and vice president for academic affairs. His decades of service and leadership helped shape the university’s academic growth and left a lasting legacy honored through awards, recognitions, and a scholarship established in his name.
