Faculty Research Grants 2025

DECEMBER 2025

Dr. Merritt Drewery, Associate Professor in the Department of Agriculture and Yuan Lu in the Institute for Molecular Life Sciences received $350,000 in funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture for the grant “Enhancing Research, Education, and Outreach Through High-Throughput Sequencing.”  This project acquires an Illumina NextSeq 2000 (NS2000) high-throughput sequencer at Texas State University. The NS2000 will be registered as shared user equipment and available to the university community and external users through a sequencing core facility for research, education, and outreach needs.

Dr. Xingzhou Guo, Assistant Professor in the Department of Engineering Technology, received $75,000 in funding from the Indiana Department of Transportation in collaboration with Purdue University (10/1/25-3/31/27).  Current highway designs typically rely on permanent barriers to separate lanes and on temporary traffic barriers and traffic control devices to establish work zones. This approach can be uneconomical, increase the risk of crashes, and cause traffic congestion. Previous efforts have primarily focused on the safety/cost benefits of movable barriers only in work zones; however, the feasibility of deploying movable barriers as permanent barriers and temporary traffic barriers has yet to be studied through roadway life cycle. This research will conduct a comprehensive comparison to determine whether to adopt movable barriers as replacements/additions in future roadway design, construction, and maintenance.

Dr. Blagoy Rangelov, Associate Professor in the Department of Physics, received funding by NASA through the MUREP program to support hands-on student training in space systems and applied space physics at Texas State University through the Space Lab. The work focuses on experiential learning using CubeSat- and space-system–inspired hardware and workflows, giving students practical experience in spacecraft design, testing, and mission operations while preparing them for NASA-relevant STEM careers.
