Faculty in Biology, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Mathematics, and Physics work in course teams that include multiple faculty and undergraduate LAs. Teams meet weekly to discuss STEM teaching and learning and prepare to teach. LAs support faculty by guiding students to engage with the content and each other during in-class activities, and by encouraging students to use available study resources.
Participating College of Science and Engineering faculty engage with us, each other, and students as they strengthen their teaching knowledge and skills, apply research-based instructional approaches in the classroom, and experience a greater sense of community in STEM at Texas State University.
Summer Institutes
Summer Institutes provide an extended opportunity for faculty to work with each other and LAs to identify and make progress towards larger-scale changes to their courses, build relationships with faculty in other departments, and gain insights from education research that can further support their teaching. They include a mix of structured, interdisciplinary sessions and team working time.
CoSE faculty participants
65+ CoSE faculty members have participated in the Learning Assistant Program since it began in 2012.
30+ faculty have participated in one or more of our Summer Institutes since the first institute in 2021.
CoSE courses redesigned for active learning
Since Fall 2012, over 450 sections of 12 gateway STEM courses have been redesigned to include shared active learning elements through the support of the LA Program.
