Policy Statement


Texas State University is committed to providing recognition to faculty and reward superior accomplishments for excellence in teaching, scholarly and creative activity, and service. 

01.SCOPE 

01.01 In accordance with Texas State University policy the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Teaching, Excellence in Scholarly/Creative Activity, and Excellence in Service are awarded through the university Faculty Awards Program.

03.NOMINATION PROCEDURES 

03.01 Phase 1: Submitting Presidential Award Nominations to the Dean’s level 

  1. Each department or school may submit only one nomination per category.

  1. Departments and schools should formalize their own internal procedures for selection of nominees. 

  1. Departmental and school nominees should submit to the College: the appropriate one-page nomination form found in AA/PPS No. 02.04.20, Presidential Awards for Excellence in Teaching, Scholarly/Creative Activity, Service, and Presidential Seminar, and the introductory and relevant sections (teaching, scholarly/creative activity, or service) of the Texas State curriculum vitae (CV). The filled-out nomination form and the CV must be submitted as a single PDF file. No other information should be included at this point (e.g., no recommendation letters and no teaching evaluations). 

  1. Guidelines that apply to all three forms: 

Everything except the CV must be listed on one page, including the pre-printed form text as well as the responses and narratives. The narratives must be written in 12-pt Times font and must have the allotted margins of the downloaded form. 

  1. Specific recommendations for each of the three forms available as links in Section 05.01 of AA/PPS No. 02.04.20, Presidential Awards for Excellence in Teaching, Scholarly/Creative Activity, Service, and Presidential Seminar: 

1) Scholarly/Creative Activity – The narrative should not be a list of publications; rather, it should summarize the publications and explain their significance. 

2) Service – The three sections of the summary (Institutional, Professional, and Community) should describe the most important service contributions. 

3) Teaching – The Summary section should include items such as new course development, technology implementation and integration, grants, awards, and publications related to teaching, mentoring undergraduate and graduate students, and impact or significance of endeavors in teaching. 

03.02 Phase 2: Submitting recommended nominations to the university level 

Upon receiving an award from the college, awardees should complete the full nomination to be submitted to the university level. Instructions are found in AA/PPS No. 02.04.20, Presidential Awards for Excellence in Teaching, Scholarly/Creative Activity, Service, and Presidential Seminar. It is recommended for candidates to immediately begin gathering the needed materials and consult with former college awardees to prepare the application for the presidential award. 

03.03 College Council Procedures for Nomination Process 

  1. Each department or school should nominate only one nominee per category. 

  

  1. Only department chairs and school directors rank applications. 

  

  1. Chairs and director shall not rank nominees from their department or school. 

  

  1. Council members should not use impact factors for comparison between different disciplines.
